Turnley spent most of his time traveling back and forth to England where he tried to recruit additional settlers. Hooper was the force behind building the Runnymede Hotel. Watmough owned several businesses and wrote a column for the Harper paper under the name "The Bird of Truth". Although the pictures were taken in the late 1880s, well past the days of the frontier west, the settlers sported guns and knives in many photos.
