My grandmother, Constance Estelle Warwick McGill, took a trip to Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, and surrounding areas with a group of friends when she was 27 years of age during the Summer of 1909 in July. Hi Linda, Thanks for stirring up interest in the Runnymede project in your e-zine. Your history is quite accurate. I have several pictures of the Runnymede -- both before and after the move from Kansas to Oklahoma. Ned Turnley was the founder of the colony and owner of the land where it was located. Turnley spent most of his time traveling back and forth to England where he tried to recruit additional settlers. Hope Hooper and Dick Watmough were two of the major players in the Runnymede Colony. Hooper was the force behind building the Runnymede Hotel. Watmough owned several businesses and wrote a column for the Harper paper under the name "The Bird of Truth". The Runnymede colonists documented their time in Kansas with a weekly column in the Harper paper and photographs, such as this one. Although the pictures were taken in the late 1880s, well past the days of the frontier west, the settlers sported guns and knives in many photos.
